Run your own server

Run Farlink’s relay on your own VPS. Your networks use your server instead of ours.

Separate from Farlink’s servers. A server you run makes no connection to ours, has no billing and no traffic limits. Only the people you invite use it.

What it does

A Farlink server helps your devices find each other and forwards encrypted data when they cannot connect directly. Your files and messages are end-to-end encrypted on your devices, so the server only sees ciphertext.

What you need

Install

  1. Unpack the archive:
    tar xzf farlink-server-0.6.4-linux-amd64.tar.gz && cd farlink-server
  2. Start the server with your own domain and IP address. -id must be exactly the address people will type, in lower case, without a slash at the end:
    ./farlink-server -id https://files.example.com -domain files.example.com -public-ip 203.0.113.5
  3. To keep it running, use the systemd file from the deploy folder. Edit the domain and address in it first.
  4. In Farlink open Settings → Servers and add your server. Check the certificate fingerprint shown in the server log.
  5. Create a network and invite people. The invitation link or QR code fills in your server for them.
